Student Participation Awards

The Australasian Fluid Mechanics Society (AFMS) will award a maximum of 10 Student Participation Awards for selected students to present their papers at the 21AFMC. The Student Participation Awards each amount to one student registration fee waiver and one complimentary 2-year AFMS membership.

Further details on the selection criteria for Student Participation Awards (and the judging process) are available here.

To apply for a Student Participation Award, prospective students must submit the following material (as PDF attachments) to the conference email address (21afmc@adelaide.edu.au) by no later than 11.59pm (Australian Central Time) on the 19th August 2018:

  • A copy of the paper that has been submitted to the conference (please note this paper should be submitted to the conference website via the online portal prior to the sending the email application for the Student Participation Award);
  •  A completed application form following the application template
  •  A letter of recommendation from their supervisor (as described in the application template).

When sending your email submission containing the attachments above, please also include “Student Participation Awards Application” as the Subject of the email. Note that if you do not use this subject heading, or if you do not follow the above instructions, your application will not be accepted.

Applicants will be notified of the selection committee’s decision approximately 5 weeks following the application deadline.

Student Presentation Prizes

The AFMS will award named prizes for the best student presentations at the 21AFMC. Between 3 to 6 prizes (to the value of $250) will be awarded. Each named prize serves to (i) honour the memory and influence of an eminent Australasian Fluid Mechanician, (ii) recognise and reward excellence in the quality of student presentations, (iii) encourage student participation in the AFMC, and (iv) promote the importance of presentational skills in the research community.

Full details on the student prizes and criteria for selection are available here .

All students presenting at the 21AFMC are automatically in the running for a student presentation prize.

Photo and Video Competition

The AFMS is also running a Photo and Video Competition which aims to highlight the beauty, diversity and applications of fluid mechanics using visual media. This competition is open to all students, with 3 awards ($500, $300 and $200 for 1st, 2nd and 3rd, respectively) for each category (photo and video). Judging criteria will include appeal to the general public, artistic merit, educational value, scientific novelty and promotion of fluid mechanics. Entries will be showcased on the AFMS website (http://www.afms.org.au/gallery.html), promoting the students’ work.
